Top 100 VC-Backed Biotech Startups
Leading biotech startups ranked by total venture funding — lead programs, clinical stage, key investors, and therapeutic focus as of Q4 2025
Updated Q4 2025 | BioPharmaWire Editors | Sources: Pitchbook, Crunchbase, company disclosures, SEC filings
This list covers 100 of the most significant VC-backed biotech companies globally, ranked by total disclosed funding within each therapeutic category. Companies that have been acquired are included where the acquisition represents a landmark exit for the sector. Companies that have completed IPOs remain listed where they retain meaningful VC backing or were recently public. The list is not exhaustive — it reflects editorial judgement about companies that are shaping the direction of the industry.

What This List Tells Us About the State of Biotech VC in 2025
Oncology Still Dominates but the Lead Is Narrowing
Oncology remains the largest category by deal count and total funding, but its share of total VC deployment has narrowed from roughly 40% of all biotech deals in 2020-2021 to approximately 30% in 2024-2025. The beneficiaries are rare disease / genetic medicine, metabolic disease (driven by GLP-1 adjacency), and immunology / autoimmune. Cell and gene therapy, after a significant pullback in 2022-2023, is recovering with more selective capital deployment focused on programs with clinical proof-of-concept.
Platform vs Asset: The Tension Continues
A significant proportion of the highest-funded companies on this list are platform companies — Recursion, Altos Labs, Ginkgo Bioworks, Generate Biomedicines — that have raised enormous amounts of capital on the basis of technology and potential rather than clinical data. The market in 2024-2025 has grown more sceptical of pure platform valuations without clinical-stage programs. Companies that raised $300M+ at pre-clinical stage in 2021-2022 are facing a harder environment for Series B/C raises if their platforms have not yet produced IND-stage programs with compelling data.
The AI Drug Discovery Cohort Faces Its First Real Test
The companies in the AI drug discovery category — Recursion, Insilico, Exscientia, Generate Biomedicines, and others — are entering their most consequential period. Phase 1 and Phase 2 readouts for AI-designed compounds over the next 24 months will determine whether the category premium in valuations is justified. Early indicators are mixed: Insilico’s ISM001 (IPF) has shown Phase 2 activity; Exscientia’s EXS21546 showed Phase 1 safety signals that required redesign. The sector is watching carefully.
Geography: Boston and the Bay Area Still Dominant, But Not Exclusively
The top 100 are concentrated in Boston/Cambridge and the San Francisco Bay Area, consistent with historical patterns. But the presence of companies from Basel (Monte Rosa), Oxford (Exscientia), Sydney (Clarity), Edmonton (Fusion), and Hong Kong/Cambridge (Insilico) reflects the genuine internationalisation of biotech VC. The UK, Australian, and Canadian clusters in particular are producing more globally competitive companies than at any point in the past decade, aided by improving local VC ecosystems and supportive government R&D incentive structures.
Key Investors Appearing Most Frequently
RA Capital Management, Foresite Capital, Atlas Venture, GV (Google Ventures), ARCH Venture Partners, Boxer Capital, and Cormorant Asset Management appear as lead or co-investors across the broadest range of companies on this list. These firms have built portfolios that function as sector reference points — when they lead a round, it signals scientific credibility to co-investors and the market. The concentration of VC power in a small number of specialist life sciences investors is higher today than at any previous point, which has implications for founders: getting a term sheet from one of these firms is both a valuation premium signal and a de facto fundraising advantage in future rounds.
